An analysis of BECCS industries' methodology for certifying industrial carbon removals
This analysis was published by Fern.
The European Commission is developing methods to certify industrial carbon removals. One of the techniques being studied is Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). BECCS aims to capture and store carbon presently stored in trees underground, without consideration of planetary boundaries and with potentially irreversible negative consequences.
An EU Expert Group is discussing proposed carbon removal methodologies. In this context, energy companies Drax (UK) and Stockholm Exergi (Sweden) (both of whom plan to add Carbon Capture and Storage to their biomass installations) have submitted proposed methodologies for measuring the carbon effect of BECCS.
In this Fern-commissioned paper, EU bioenergy and forest policy expert Duncan Brack analyses Drax and Stockholm Exergi’s proposed methodologies and reveals that they would ensure their businesses’ profitability but not achieve negative emissions.
